Clinical Case 20080208 - General overview


  • Patient: Female, 71 years old.
  • Clinical symptoms: Anal incontinence appeared during childbirth 30 years ago.  
  • Digital exam of the anus, and an ultrasonography were done.  
  • Anal examination: weak strength of the anal muscles.

 

Abbreviations: EAI: Internal anal sphincter; EAE: External anal sphincter; LESION EAE: External anal sphincter injury; MARGEN SECCION EAI: Internal anal sphincter cutting area; LESION ESFINTERES: Sphincter Injury.

 

An exploration from puborectal muscles to anal verge was performed. An injury of both (internal and external) anal muscles at the anterior side was observed at 2-3cm from anal verge (see images 1-3, 6-8 and 10). A gap of 11.1mm between both sides of the sphincters can be seen (See images 4-5-9).

Treatment: Sphincteroplasty.

Patient is free of symptoms (7 months of follow-up).
