III Diploma of Specialization in Ultrasound for Surgeons

Registration for the III Diploma of Specialization in Ultrasound for Surgeons is opened from June to December, 2010.

This Diploma is an Advanced Study of the University of Zaragoza, with 120 hours (80 hours practice) of continuous education.

The main objective of the diploma is to provide the practicing surgeon with the adequate training in ultrasound imaging to understand the essential of surgical ultrasound as well as to perform properly an ultrasound examination. The surgeon is currently involved in many different clinical areas as neck, breast, intraoperative, anal canal, rectum, vascular system and acute evaluation. This advanced course seeks to enable the operator to maximize the diagnostic information and to recognize the limitations of the scan in any of these fileds. Moreover, the course aims to increase the clinician’s awareness of the contribution of ultrasound in improving the clinical practice and introduce the surgeon to its enormous potential.

After successfully completing the course the surgeon should be able to:

  • To understand and to describe the physics as well as the differents components of the ultrasound machine.
  • To perform a proper ultrasound test, capturing and storing the best images from the neck (being able to differentiate among cyst or solid lesions and to detect thiroid or parathiroid tumours. In Breast surgery the surgeon will identify adenomas, souspicious lesions and will know the ultrasound guied biposy.
  • To Start using ultrasound intraoperative examination in the field of liver and pancreatic surgery.
  • To stage rectal tumors by means of the endoluminal ultrasound, and to properly explore the anal canal and pelvis floor.
  • To use the ultrasound machine in vascular or emergency settings.

 

 

The course is divided into modules. In order to obtain the Diploma of Specialization of the University of Zaragoza, all modules must be completed successfully.

The contents are mainly practical. All practices consist of explorations in a real clinical case, selected depending on its educational interest. After its completion, the cases could be reviewed as many times as desired.
